Army assists communities in Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea
More than 80 families are currently taking refuge in The Salvation Army's church hall in Wewak, in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, following an unexpected sea swell that occurred recently.
Regional Officer Captain Michael Dengi said the huge waves that flooded houses and other buildings, and also destroyed food gardens, forced some people to evacuate to safer ground. More than 2,500 people in the area were displaced.
There are currently two care centres serving those affected, with the Army planning to set up a third. Captain Dengi also said that mosquito nets, tents, canvases and food are being provided with funds from Territorial Headquarters in Port Moresby.
The unusually high tide is believed to have originated along the coast of New Ireland Province, north-east of the PNG mainland.
